Get central generators to curb incessant fire outbreak, Obasa advises traders

Mudashiru Obasa, Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, has advised leaders of market associations in Lagos to have central power supply to curb incessant fire outbreak at markets in the state.

Obasa, also the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, gave the advice when members of Lagos Chapter of Market Leaders and Traders Association of Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit.

Obasa’s Media Aide, Tolani Abati, said in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday that the association’s delegation was led by its President, Mr Christopher Okpala.

Obasa explained that having a common source of power supply was better than individual generating set that usually lead to incessant fire outbreak in the markets.

“This common power supply will serve the whole market and it will go a long way to curb incessant fire outbreak in the markets. This initiative will be a benefit to the traders in the market because the recurrence of the inferno had created huge losses to the traders themselves,’’ he said.

Obasa also advised the traders to constantly liaise with local government councils and Neighborhood Safety Corps in their areas.

The speaker said this would help curb the problem of blocked drainage and insecurity, particularly those caused by hoodlums.

He implored them to also perform their civic duty by paying their taxes as and when due.

Earlier, Okpala, said that the visit was to present to the speaker an award of “Extra-Ordinary Ambassador of Commerce.”

He said the traders had also named the 2020 edition of the association’s football competition as ‘Mudashiru Obasa Traders Cup’.

Other Lagos lawmakers present at the occasion were Mr Olawale Olayiwola (Mushin II), Mr Sanni Okanlawon (Kosofe I) and Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, among others. (NAN)
