Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has urged Corps members to respect the cultural norms and traditions of the people among whom they find themselves.

Oborevwori said this on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of Batch B stream 1 of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members at the Issele-uku orientation camp.

The governor was represented by the Delta Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari.

According to him, there may be minor nuances of differences between the people’s ways of life and the ones they are used to.

“You have to assiduously learn to show understanding and adaptability as a way of justifying some of the reasons for the national service.

“I urge you all to accept this call to national service with a good sense of purpose and transparent patriotism.

“l assure you of the warmth and love of Deltans wherever you are posted to,for your primary assignment.

“Let all your actions and activities help to deepen the current calm and peaceful co-coexistence among Deltans and residents of the State.

“This approach will ensure that you benefit immensely from the programme while the nation in turn, will derive maximum dividends from the services you render during the service year,” he said.

Oborevwori said that through the orientation exercise, corps members had been armed with most of the leadership qualities- perseverance, endurance, discipline, selflessness, sacrifice and love for our dear country.

“I urge you to tap from the rich experience you have garnered here to make the best of the situation you will find yourselves both during your primary assignment and other future endeavours.

“As leaders of both today and tomorrow, you are expected to be objective in your analysis of national events to enable you play the role of bringing peace, understanding and development to the country.

“You are leaders of today, because the block you mould today will form the foundation of that tomorrow you are looking forward to.

“l urge you to be cautious in all your activities. This is a tempting period for most of you as the urge to embark on adventures could cause serious danger or be detrimental to your future,” he said.

He urged corps members to moderate the ecstasy of youthful exuberance in all their undertakings during their service year.

“I urge you to be vanguards of rural development, to brace up to the challenges of developing our rural areas accordingly, to ensure the furtherance of the objectives of NYSC in this State.

“I expect each and everyone of you to participate meaningfully, either individually or collectively, in the areas of development as Rural Health, Mass Literacy.

“Environmental sanitation, reproductive health education, family life education, MDG and skill acquisition, with a view of raising the living standard of the rural populace who repose so much confidence in you.

“I urge you all to be part of the development efforts of the State Government. This administration is pursuing sustainable development anchored on MORE agenda.

“We are committed to the sustenance of peace and security, developing the abundant human resources in the State,,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Olusegun Also, NYSC Coordinator, Delta, urged corps members to be good ambassadors of their family, the NYSC scheme, and most importantly themselves.

“Avoid unnecessary journeys as such could expose you to risks of road accidents,” he said .

He also urged Corp employers to provide an enabling environment for Corps members to discharge their duties optimally bearing in mind the statutory responsibility of their welfare packages.

“Employers equally, are hereby encouraged to shun any form of illegal dealings that negate the lofty ideals of the NYSC,” he said.(NAN)
