The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says four adult males died in a fire incident at Power Line Bus Stop, Ikola, Alimosho.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency received a distress call about the incident at 1.52 p.m. and activated its response team, which arrived at the scene within 25 minutes.
He said several makeshift structures were razed in the incident.
“Preliminary assessment and engagement with residents at the scene indicate that the incident followed a disagreement that escalated into communal unrest,” he said.
He said four adult males lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries.
According to him, emergency medical support was provided at the scene by the Agbado Oke-Odo Ambulance Service, Nigerian Red Cross Society and other health responders.
He said the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service brought the fire under control and conducted damping down to prevent further spread.
Oke-Osanyintolu said a joint security operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps was activated to restore order.
He said the Chairman of Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area was also at the scene to coordinate with community leaders.
The permanent secretary said normalcy had been restored in Ikola and surrounding communities, while security agencies remained on the ground to maintain peace and protect lives and property.
He urged residents to remain calm, shun reprisals and avoid spreading unverified information capable of heightening tension.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the state government condemned all acts of violence and maintained zero tolerance for actions threatening the peace and unity of Lagos.
He said a full investigation had commenced to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident.
He added that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
The permanent secretary condoled with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
