Exclusive: Resign now or face sack, angry Tinubu tells Betta Edu

Dr. Betta Edu

Dr. Betta Edu

Barring any last-minute twist, suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, is set to resign from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet or face sack, Political Economist NG can authoritatively report.

Presidency insiders told Political Economist NG that Tinubu who was visibly miffed by preliminary report on the activities of Dr Edu during her spell as minister has asked her to resign or face imminent sack.

Our source, however, said that her resignation will not save her from further investigation and possible prosecution as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited her to its headquarters in Abuja, for questioning over the alleged fraud.

She is expected to be at the commission’s office on Tuesday barely 24 hours after her suspension from office by President Tinubu over a controversial N585.189 million payment to a private bank account.

Political Economist NG recalls that Tinubu had on Monday suspended Edu from office with immediate effect and ordered the EFCC to fully investigate the activities of the ministry.

The EFCC invitation was sent to the suspended minister less than 30 minutes after President Tinubu announced her suspension from office.

Edu’s suspension was said to have been earlier recommended  by the EFCC to pave way for a thorough investigation which insiders say may indict other persons in her ministry and the Presidency.

If she resigns or is sacked, Edu, 37, and mother of two, will be the first cabinet member in the Tinubu government to be humiliated out of office on account of corruption.
