Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a 20,000-litre fuel tanker fitted with a custom concealed compartment used to traffic illicit drugs across state lines.
The vehicle, a tanker marked MKA 960 XC with a history of evading law enforcement, was intercepted on Friday along the Akoko/Lokoja expressway in Ondo State.
According to a statement released Sunday in Abuja by Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, officers pursued the vehicle after the driver ignored orders to pull over.
The high-speed chase ended in Ugbe Akoko, where the driver abandoned the tanker inside a church compound and fled into the surrounding bush to evade capture.
A subsequent search of the modified tanker uncovered a hidden compartment built into the structure of the vehicle. Inside, officers discovered 165 bags of cannabis weighing a combined 2,145 kilograms, packed alongside legitimate fuel cargo.
NDLEA officials confirmed that the vehicle and its illicit haul were en route to Jos, Plateau State. Operations remain ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing driver.
