The Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) on Saturday celebrated its 31st anniversary, honouring industry stakeholders who have contributed to the growth and development of telecommunications sector.
Among those honoured was the former governor of Edo, Mr Godwin Obaseki, who got the Digital governor of the Year’’
Reacting to the award virtually, Obaseki thanked ATCON for recognising and acknowledging his effort in the digital transformation of Edo, even after leaving office.
He said that the award was actually for the hundreds of digital champions who worked tirelessly using their own power to ensure that the internet had various solutions that humans used to provide services.
‘’Any organisation, institution or community that does not utilise technology may most likely become extinct in the nearest future.
‘’However, the government is playing a crucial role to create a conducive environment for the education of children and this is why we prioritise technology and education in my tenure.
”We are indeed glad and humbled that our modest effort and true solidarity to the digital world was noticed and acknowledged by this association,’’ he said.
Also in a brief address, the Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Aminu Maida, acknowledged the relevance of the industry and its contribution.
Maida said that in spite of the challenges, there were lots of transformation in the industry which is a sign of growth.
He also said that the commission was working towards addressing issues associated with the industry.
In his welcome address, the President, ATCON, Mr Tony Emoekpere, commended the association’s past leaders, members, and stakeholders for their tireless efforts in shaping the telecommunications industry.
Emoekpere said that ATCON had been at the forefront of advocating for private sector participation, fair competition and infrastructure development in the telecommunications sector.
He said that the association would continue to collaborate with stakeholders to position Nigeria as a leading digital economy in Africa.
According to him, the association will also advocate for policies that foster innovation and investment, drive infrastructure development to bridge connectivity gaps and collaborate across public and private sectors.
NAN reports that the event featured presentation of awards to individuals and institutions who have contributed to the growth of telecommunications industry.
The awards included lifetime achievement awardees, the “100 Leading Personalities in Nigerian Telecoms”, and the Best-Performing Governor in Digital Transformation.
The event was attended by industry stakeholders, including telecoms operators, regulators and other stakeholders. (NAN)
