Classy Arsenal Win the Community Shield
Arsenal outclassed Manchester City 3-0 at Wembley Sunday to win the first silverware of the new season and lay down a marker to their Premier League rivals.
The Gunners were without their World Cup-winning trio of Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski but it didn’t show as they exerted their superiority from the very beginning, and led through Santi Cazorla, whose neat finish beat Willy Caballero, who started ahead of Joe Hart in the City goal, from 18 yards.
Arsenal doubled their lead before the break through Aaron Ramsey, who drilled in after a neat touch after Sanogo’s driving run and assured pass.
City looked brighter after the half time introduction of David Silva and came closest to scoring when Stevan Jovetic struck the post with a far post header.
But that’s the closest the champions got to scoring and Olivier Giroud wrapped up the win on the hour in emphatic style, scoring the goal of the game with a sumptuous strike from 25 yards.
