The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has deployed operational personnel to Garko Local Government Area following reports that a pack of rabid dogs attacked at least 18 residents across multiple communities.
The emergency deployment was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday in Kano by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Usman Abdullahi-Umar, on behalf of State Commander Abdullahi Al’ameen.
According to Al’ameen, the NFSS received an urgent distress call around 2:00 p.m. regarding a dog exhibiting symptoms of rabies attacking residents in Garko town.
“The dog has so far bitten 11 persons in Garko town before moving to neighbouring communities, including Raba, Kadage, Gurjiya, and Dausai,” Al’ameen stated. “It has also attacked and bitten seven additional persons in the affected communities.”
The command further disclosed that intelligence reports indicate at least two other dogs in the general area have contracted the virus, raising concerns over a potential localized outbreak.
In response, personnel from the NFSS Garko Division, led by Divisional Forest Officer Auwalu Muhammad, have been dispatched to track, isolate, and contain the infected animals across the affected terrain.
Commander Al’ameen urged residents of Garko and surrounding villages to exercise caution and immediately report sightings of stray or aggressive dogs to the nearest NFSS post or security authority. He also strongly advised anyone exposed or bitten by the animals to seek immediate medical treatment at a health facility to prevent fatal complications associated with rabies.
