Mr. Andy Odeh, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) has said that an explosion at a gas processing plant in an upstream facility at Gbarain Ubie, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Tuesday did not affect their operations.

“NLNG is aware of reports of an explosion at a gas processing plant in an upstream facility at Gbarain Ubie, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Tuesday. Please note that this does not impact the gas supply to the NLNG plant or our operations,” Odeh said in a statement on Friday.

Recall that Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) spokesman, Mr Michael Adande ha confirmed several explosions near its gas processing plant in Gbarain, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

According to Adande, the incident happened at the Shell facility in Gbarain but stated that the cause of the explosions was yet to be determined.

He said: “We are actively monitoring reports of smoke detected near our Gbaran central processing facility in Bayelsa State.

“While the source appears to be external to our facility, we are in close communication with regulatory authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of the surrounding communities.”

The incident  which occurred on Tuesday has raised concerns regarding potential disruptions to gas exports.
