The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Strategic Command says it arrested more than 400 suspected drug offenders and secured over 50 convictions between January and June 2026.
The Commander of the agency in Kano State, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, disclosed this on Thursday in Kano after a road walk and sensitisation to commemorate the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The global observance is annually marked on June 26 to raise awareness about the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.
The day has “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses” as the theme for the 2026 edition.
The NDLEA commander in Kano State, therefore, said that the agency arrested suspects, both males and females, for various drug-related offences.
He added that the command also seized more than 2,000 kilogrammes of assorted illicit drugs and substances, including cannabis sativa, diazepam, pregabalin, Exol-5 and a substance locally known as “suck and die”, among other drugs.
He announced that the command secured more than 50 convictions at the Federal High Court, with the offenders sentenced to various jail terms.
“The agency also rehabilitated and counselled more than 300 clients within the period reviewed,” he said.
The commander said the command conducted corporate sensitisation, grassroots advocacy and public enlightenment in schools, markets, communities and places of worship across the state.
He identified inadequate information sharing and poor cooperation from some individuals and communities as major challenges affecting the agency’s operations.
Yahaya-Lawal reiterated the agency’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse, warning those involved in illicit drug activities to desist and embrace lawful means of livelihood.
He urged residents to adopt healthy lifestyles and avoid substance abuse.
He commended the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba-Marwa, and the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir-Yusuf, for their support.
He also lauded officers and men of the command, as well as other security agencies, the media and other stakeholders for their roles in the successes recorded.
He assured that the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command would sustain intelligence-led operations, synergy and community partnerships to dismantle drug networks and ensure safer society.
He called on the public, traditional and religious leaders, and other stakeholders to continue providing timely and actionable information to support the agency’s ongoing crackdown on illicit drug activities and trafficking across the state.(NAN
