The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the EFCC on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 secured the conviction and sentencing of Aisha Alkali Wakil, (aka Mama Boko Haram) alongside Tahiru Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyode before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri. The defendants were sentenced to five years imprisonment without option of fine.

The judgment was the climax of a process that commenced on Monday, September 14, 2020 when the defendants were re-arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N71,400,000 (Seventy-One Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira) only.

Barrister Aisha Wakil was one of the three persons declared wanted by the military in 2016 over their relationship with Boko Haram sect. Twenty-four hours after she was declared wanted, she appeared at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, where she reported to the authorities and was subsequently granted administrative bail.

In a media interview in 2016, Wakil, wife of Justice Alkali Gana Wakil, said her husband was aware of her closeness with the Boko Haram sect.

When asked what her husband’s reaction over her close relationship with them had been, she said: “They are all Kanuris; they are his people. I am very emotional and I love people so much. He knows that. He tried to stop me, but once I set my mind on doing something, I do not stop until I have achieved it. I told him that these are our children and after all, they are his blood. So, he said he would pray for me and he would follow me to wherever I went.”
