The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has carried out a partial demolition of illegal structures located behind the Barracks Bus Stop in the Surulere area of the state.
The enforcement exercise was disclosed in a statement on Friday by LASBCA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Adu Ademuyiwa.
According to the agency, the demolition was executed after the property developers repeatedly ignored statutory notices and failed to comply with state building regulations.
LASBCA noted that routine inspections revealed the affected structures directly contravened the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law. Specifically, the buildings exceeded approved setback limits, encroaching on spaces legally reserved for safety, public accessibility, and proper urban planning. Furthermore, the developers were unable to produce valid statutory approval documents for the construction.
Prior to the demolition, the agency had served the developers with multiple contravention and enforcement notices ordering an immediate halt to construction. However, the owners failed to regularize the properties, prompting the agency to remove the offending sections.
LASBCA emphasized that the structures violated state building codes, thereby posing significant risks to human lives, adjoining properties, and the surrounding environment.
Reiterating its commitment to public safety and sustainable urban development, the agency urged property owners, developers, and contractors to secure necessary planning permits and building approvals before breaking ground.
LASBCA warned that individuals who flout statutory notices will face strict sanctions, while advising residents to support the state by reporting illegal or distressed buildings within their communities.
