Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Task Force) have arrested and detained a former paramilitary officer for alleged impersonation, extortion, and harassment of motorists and traders across the state.
The Chairman of the Task Force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed the arrest in a statement released on Sunday by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr. Abdulraheem Gbadeyan.
According to Akerele, the suspect was apprehended at the Oshodi bus stop following the circulation of a viral video showing his arrest by law enforcement officials.
Dismissal and Alleged Misconduct
Akerele revealed that the suspect was dismissed from service several months ago due to acts of gross misconduct. His prior offenses included theft, the use of a forged identity card, extortion of local traders and motorists, and general indiscipline.
Despite his dismissal, the suspect allegedly continued to parade himself as an active Task Force official, using fake authority to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public.
During the arrest at Oshodi, the suspect reportedly refused an invitation for questioning and resisted detention before being subdued through tactical coordination and minimal force.
“The suspect no longer has any affiliation with the agency,” Akerele emphasized, noting that such fraudulent acts undermine public trust in legitimate law enforcement operations.
Legal Action and Public Vigilance
The Task Force boss stated that investigations have been concluded and the suspect will be formally arraigned in court on Monday.
Akerele reiterated the agency’s determination to curb illegal activities executed under the guise of official duty, urging Lagos residents to remain vigilant.
He advised members of the public to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the Task Force and to report suspicious interactions through official channels.
Additionally, Akerele called on journalists to ensure thorough verification and balanced reporting when handling allegations involving the agency, reaffirming the unit’s commitment to safeguarding residents and protecting its institutional integrity.
