JDPC opens trauma centre for conflict victims in Plateau

The Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos has inaugurated a trauma healing centre in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Ms. Benedicta Daber, JDPC Coordinator, said that the centre was established to provide psychosocial support to victims of violent attacks in the area.

She explained that the initiative was part of the Accessible and Equitable Justice for Women and Youths (AEJ-WAY) project.

Daber said that the project was being implemented in collaboration with the Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (CCFN) and funded by the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD).

“The choice of Barkin Ladi was based on our needs assessment and the active involvement of project participants.

“The recurrent conflicts in this area have left many families dealing with trauma that may not require traditional medical care, but deep psychosocial intervention.

“That’s why we established this centre, and we believe it will truly serve its purpose,” she said.

Also speaking, Mr Jude Akoh of CCFN, said the project commenced in June 2024 to ensure the inclusion of women and youths in community decision-making processes.

He added that the initiative, which was active in both Barkin Ladi and Mangu LGAs, also focused on responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV), with the trauma centre playing a key role in delivering psychosocial services to affected individuals.

Inaugurating the facility, Chairman of Barkin Ladi LGA, Mr Stephen Pwajok, commended JDPC for the initiative.

Represented by his deputy, Mr Felix Pam, Pwajok pledged the council’s support to ensure the centre functioned effectively and achieved its goals. (NAN)
