Farming does not mean poverty – clerics tells youths

Msgr. Gabriel Osu, Director of Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, has called on the youth to engage in agriculture to which has huge potential for economic growth, employment and wealth creation.

Osu said on Monday that youths were the most active population and the engine room of Nigeria’s productivity, and therefore should explore agriculture well for income generation.

The cleric spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“Youths needs to explore ways to key into agriculture value chain; it is so obvious now that that is the way to go.

“Agriculture is an investment opportunity where returns are really very high if it is properly managed.

“Governments need to intensify efforts to sensitise our people to that reality, especially the youth.

“We need to let them know that the fact that you are a farmer does not mean you are a poor man. I encourage our youths to look in that direction for their own benefits,” Osu said.

The cleric urged governments to make concerted efforts to change the orientation of the youths about farming.

“With the current economic challenges, government should make agricultural production the power house of national development.
