Education only legacy responsible govts, parents can bequeath the future generations – UNICEF

Admin August 27, 2019

UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

The United Nations Children Education Fund ( UNICEF) has identified household poverty and child labour as some of the factors responsible for the setback being recorded in Girl Child education in some parts of the country.
Mr Muntaka Muktar, Field Officer, UNICEF, said this on Tuesday in Kano at a Media Dialogue on School-based management committees organised by the Fund.
Muktar also mentioned residence or school  location as well as low parental literacy as other factors purely responsible for lower status of girl child education.
“Pursuit of material wealth by youth as well as limited employment opportunities for school leavers also contribute toward decrease of child enrolment, ” he said.
He said that already the fund had reached out to to religious leaders, traditional leaders and other stakeholders in sensitising parents on the need to allow their children to acquire western education alongside Qur’anic  education.
The field officer said that the approach would encourage parents to send their children to school to acquire education.
He said that education was the only legacy any responsible governments and parents could bequeath to the future generations. ( NAN)
