Dozens of persons are said to have been killed, and several others were declared missing after suspected bandits invaded Baure village in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Baure village is widely known as a bandits’ den where bandits have significant control.

A resident (name withheld), told Channels Television on Friday that, the attack took place on Tuesday when the hoodlums were on a rampage, visiting house to house in the area.

He said, that during the attack, about fifteen persons died on the spot while several others were still unaccounted for.

“The hoodlums also burnt some of the corpses”, he noted.

The Police Spokesman DSP Abubakar Sadiq, also confirmed the incident to our correspondent on a telephone call on Friday however did not give further details.

“Yes, it is true. But I am trying to put all the details together so that I will keep you posted”, he said.

In a related incident, suspected bandits were said to have laid ambush on members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps in the same Baure village.

Eyewitnesses told the BBC Hausa that the victims mostly hailed from Charanchi, Safana, Kurfi and Kaita LGAs, were attacked on Thursday while returning from a condolence visit in the neighbouring Batsari LGA.

He puts the casualty figure to over thirty.

“The victims were members of a local vigilante group from different local governments, who went on a condolence visit to Madaddafai village over the death of one of their members.

“After the condolences, their leaders returned home, but the rest decided to proceed to the Baure village where they were ambushed by the bandits”, he said.

The Katsina state police command is yet to confirm the incidents as of the time of filing this report.
