B-R-E-A-K-I-N-G: History as 339 students bag First Class at Covenant University

Covenant University, Ota Ogun state, currently ranked as Nigeria’s best university has produced a historic 339 First Class graduates out of 1607 students comprising 1456 undergraduates and 151 post graduates students.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abiodun Humphrey Adebayo while giving his speech during the 19th Convocation Ceremony themed “The Release of Eagles 2024” held on Friday 11th October, 2024 announced that 339 undergraduate students came out with First Class Honours.  Church Gist, an authoritative news portal on church matters quoted the VC as saying that this was the highest since the inception of the University. 762 came out with Second Class Upper; 330 with Second Class Lower while 25 came out with Third Class.

He also noted that 41 graduated at the Ph.D level, 6 with MBA, 91 with MSc, 9 with M.Eng and 4 with M.A making it a total of 151 post graduate students.

Political Economist NG recalls that Covenant University was ranked by the Times Higher Education University World Ranking as Number 1 in Nigeria, 1st in West Africa, 6th in Sub-Saharan Africa and ranked among the top 1000 universities in the World.

In the 2025 rankings, THE said it ranked more than 2,000 institutions from 115 countries and territories.

The THE World University Rankings, often referred to as the THE Rankings, is the annual publication of university rankings by the Times Higher Education magazine.

It is globally rated as authoritative as the ranking were based on empirical indices including research facilities, Faculty and innovativeness.

 

In the 2025 rankings, the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria came second, while third position was occupied by Landmark University, a sister university to Covenant both owned by Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners Chapel International.

University of Ibadan slipped from its second position in 2024 to place 4th in 2025 rankings.

Covenant University has since inception maintained a high standard in character and content with the university premising its education on the total man concept of academic knowledge, physical fitness and entrepreneurship, reports Political Economist NG.

The QS World University Sustainability Rankings 2024, says Covenant University is ranked 273 in Governance, 409 in Environmental Sustainability and 891 in Environmental Impact.

This year’s convocation was attended by the Chancellor and Chairman Board of Regents, Dr. David Oyedepo; Vice President – Education, Pastor Mrs. Faith Oyedepo (wife of Bishop Oyedepo); Pro-Chancellor, Bishop David Abioye; among other dignitaries.
