Nasarawa State Deputy Governor, Mr Silas Agara, has appealed to electorate in the state and Nigeria in general to ignore corrupt aspirants and choose new leaders based on competence and track records.
He made the appeal on Tuesday at the official inauguration of his campaign office in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
Addressing people at the office, Agara said competence, fear of God and track record of achievements should be the criteria for electing new leaders in the 2019 general elections.
He said that for Nigeria to witness speedy growth, transformation and reduction in corrupt tendencies, aspirants with a history of corruption should be sidelined for the overall good of the country.
Agara also warned Nigerians not to be carried away by ‘money bag’ politicians.
“A race is not all about financial war chase, but a measure on how competent one is and how grounded one is with not just the system, but with the people.
“Election is not financial war. It is a competence assessment done by the ordinary people to decide who is best suited to govern or represent them.
“I am proud to say that I am on ground with the people, in tune with governance and with a track record in making assessments,’’ he said.
Agara said that competence and experience in governance encouraged him to consult with stakeholders across the state with a view to making decision on whether to declare for the 2019 gubernatorial race in the state.
He said his experience in governance would be a plus to the state if he ran and won the gubernatorial polls.
The deputy governor assured that if elected he would continue to follow the democratic strides of his principal, Gov. Umaru Al-Makura.
“We are taking our steps based on these facts and if elected to continue with the seeing is believing policy of governor Al-Makura whose strides in development have opened windows of opportunities to our people.
“You can also check from where the other aspirants are coming from, what they have been doing before now.
“You will notice that we have the will, experience in politics and governance more than any of them,” he said.
He commended his supporters for their good conduct throughout the period of consultation, adding that he was impressed with the responses gotten across the 13 local government areas he visited.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign office was officially inaugurated by Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
Other who attended included state legislators and Mr Musa Omaki, the Director General of Agara Campaign Organisations and other members of the campaign team.
