A 22-year-old driver, Ebenezer Oluwaseyi, was on Wednesday remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre by an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo following a fatal crash that claimed the life of a dispatch rider.

Oluwaseyi faces a four-count charge including murder, damage to property, reckless driving, and driving without a valid driver’s licence. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Police Prosecutor Insp. Evelyn Motim told the court that the defendant committed the offenses on September 12 at about 4:20 p.m. in front of the MKO Abiola Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta.

According to the prosecution, Oluwaseyi was driving an unregistered 2007 Lexus ES 350 recklessly when he collided with an oncoming Qlink motorcycle (registration number LAG EKY 739 QW) operated by Mayowa Afinni.

The impact resulted in the rider’s death and destroyed the motorcycle, owned by Ogunyemi Oluwatimileyin, beyond repair.

Motim added that the defendant was driving without a valid driver’s licence, endangering the lives of other road users. She emphasized that such negligence and reckless driving must not be tolerated.

The prosecutor noted that the offences contravene Sections 5, 6, 7, and 10, Cap: F:13, Laws of the Federation (as applicable in Ogun State, 2004).

Presiding Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Sam-Obaleye granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties in like sum, who must be registered bondsmen with the Ogun State Judiciary.

Magistrate Sam-Obaleye ordered Oluwaseyi remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail conditions and adjourned the case until September 28 for hearing. (NAN)
