UNICCON unveils indigenous combat drone

Admin May 7, 2026

UNICCON Group says it has developed Africa’s first indigenous loitering munition drone through its subsidiary, Babasky Technologies.

The company said the project was delivered in partnership with Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

The announcement came in a statement signed by Chairman, Prof. Chuks Ekwueme, on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the drone system, named the “UNIKAM Series”, was unveiled at a secured facility in Jaji, Kaduna State.

Ekwueme said the platform was fully designed and developed in Nigeria by indigenous engineers.

He described the project as a major milestone in Nigeria’s technological and defence advancement.

According to him, the system was created to address Africa’s growing security challenges.

He said the drone could carry explosive payloads and execute precision strikes within designated operational ranges.

He added that the platform also featured advanced artificial intelligence and autonomous target detection capabilities.

“Every component of the drone and munitions was locally sourced and produced by indigenous engineers.

“We remain committed to strategic partnerships that strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities and tackle security threats across Africa,” he said

Ekwueme said military experts who assessed the system praised its operational strength and technological resilience.

He said the innovation would reduce dependence on foreign defence procurement and boost local manufacturing capacity.

He said: “The partnership between UNICCON Group and DICON has lasted over two years.

“It has delivered major innovations in drone systems and electronic warfare technologies.”

He said the Jaji demonstration also featured electronic jamming systems and other advanced defence solutions.

According to him, the project could improve Nigeria’s response to emerging threats and create export opportunities across Africa.

Ekwueme said the innovation highlighted Africa’s growing capacity to build world-class technology for local realities.

In his remarks, Maj.-Gen. Babatunde Alaya, Director-General of DICON, commended UNICCON for the initiative.

Alaya reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening indigenous defence technology and regional collaboration.
