The Federal Government’s efforts to expand access to quality healthcare services across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas are set to receive a boost through UbuntuCare Africa, a digital health platform designed to connect citizens with healthcare providers and essential health services through technology.
The platform is expected to complement ongoing government initiatives aimed at strengthening primary healthcare and advancing Universal Health Coverage by extending access to healthcare information, consultations, referrals and follow-up care, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities. Through its integrated digital and community-based healthcare network, UbuntuCare seeks to support preventive care, early diagnosis and continuity of treatment at the grassroots level.

At the heart of UbuntuCare Africa is the belief that access to primary healthcare should not be determined by location, income level or internet connectivity. To address these barriers, the platform provides toll-free first-contact support, nurse-led triage, doctor teleconsultations, basic laboratory services, access to essential medicines, referrals and follow-up care through an integrated last-mile healthcare network.
Built on the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which emphasises shared humanity and collective well-being, the platform connects citizens with clinicians, licensed pharmacies, clinics, hospitals and other healthcare providers through a coordinated digital ecosystem. By bridging the gap between digital access and physical care, UbuntuCare enables patients to move seamlessly from health guidance and consultation to treatment, medication and ongoing care.
The platform combines digital triage, nurse-led support, telemedicine, biometric-enabled health identification and verified provider access. It also offers flexible subscription options, including daily contribution models, to help households in the informal sector manage healthcare costs in ways that reflect prevailing income patterns across many communities.
A key component of UbuntuCare’s approach is its network of pre-screened healthcare providers, including clinics, hospitals, licensed pharmacies and Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs). By bringing healthcare services closer to communities, the initiative seeks to reduce challenges associated with distance, affordability and limited healthcare infrastructure, while supporting broader efforts to improve healthcare utilisation at the local level.
The platform also operates a 24-hour toll-free multilingual health support service to ensure that individuals without smartphones, internet access or mobile data can still receive first-contact healthcare guidance. The service is expected to improve access for rural populations, women, older persons, farmers, traders, artisans and other groups that have historically faced barriers to healthcare services.
Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of UbuntuCare Africa, Chukwunonimem Michael Ike, said the platform was developed to help close persistent gaps in healthcare access by leveraging technology and community-based partnerships.
According to him, “Nigeria has made significant investments in strengthening primary healthcare, but millions of people still face barriers in accessing timely and affordable care. UbuntuCare is designed to support existing healthcare structures by connecting citizens with trusted providers and helping them navigate the healthcare system more easily, regardless of where they live.”

UbuntuCare Africa is led by co-founders Chukwunonimem Michael Ike and Dr. Jemchang Yildam Fabong, whose combined experience spans technology architecture, digital transformation, inclusive finance, health insurance technology, clinical medicine, health financing, healthcare administration and Universal Health Coverage implementation.
