Troops of the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army have rescued 19 kidnapped victims and neutralised one terrorist during a coordinated operation in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

This is contained in a statement by Lt. Odunola Olawuyi, Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, on Saturday in Abuja.

Olawuyi said the operation, conducted by troops of the 7 Guards Battalion in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and local vigilantes, took place around Gidan Dogo following credible intelligence on the location of the terrorists.

She said the terrorists were reportedly responsible for the recent abduction of residents in the Byazhin area of Bwari.

According to her, troops made contact with the criminals during the operation, leading to a firefight in which one of the terrorists was neutralised while others escaped with suspected gunshot wounds.

“Further exploitation of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle and a locally fabricated firearm.

“All 19 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued and evacuated to safety, while troops later returned to their Forward Operating Base in Bwari.

“The rescued victims are currently receiving attention,” she said.

The Commander, Guards Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Adebisi Onasanya, commended the troops and collaborating security agencies for their bravery and professionalism.

Onasanya reaffirmed the brigade’s commitment to safeguarding residents of the FCT and protecting Abuja as the nation’s seat of power.

He added that the brigade would continue to intensify joint operations with other security agencies to rid the territory and surrounding areas of kidnapping, terrorism and other criminal activities.
