Military forces under the Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA have killed a key terrorist lieutenant and recovered a cache of heavy weaponry during an offensive in Katsina State on Saturday, August 29.

The operation, carried out by troops of Sector 2, targeted identified terrorist hideouts in the Matazu Local Government Area.

According to military officials, the troops encountered stiff resistance from armed combatants but successfully repelled the attack with superior firepower, forcing the remaining terrorists to retreat.

During a post-engagement clearance of the area, troops confirmed the death of a high-profile terrorist known as “Smally,” identified as a direct lieutenant to the notorious terrorist leader Kachalla Muhammadu Filani.

In addition to neutralizing the commander, the troops recovered significant military-grade hardware and equipment, including:

3 Machine Guns
2 AK-47 Rifles
11 Ammunition Magazines180 Rounds of Live Ammunition

6 Motorcycles used by the group for mobility

In an official statement released on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer for Operation FANSAN YAMMA, highlighted that the strike is part of a broader, sustained effort to dismantle criminal and terrorist networks across the Joint Operations Area.

Danja reaffirmed the military’s commitment to maintaining pressure on these groups, denying them operational freedom, and restoring lasting peace to affected communities in the region.
