President Bola Tinubu on Thursday confirmed the full redemption of rewards promised to members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress.
Tinubu said each D’Tigress player had received the money equivalent of $100,000, while each official received the equivalent of $50,000.
The President disclosed this in a post on his official X handle, saying the payments completed the team’s package of rewards.
The package also includes national honours and three-bedroom houses in Abuja for the players and officials.
“For the first time, the Federal Government has fulfilled this scale of presidential sporting rewards in full within one year.
“We had to follow the processes required by law and ensure that every commitment was properly implemented.
“That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept.”
Tinubu said the outstanding cash rewards for members of the Super Falcons were also being concluded.
He added that Super Falcons players and officials had already received title documents for their house allocations and National Honours certificates.
According to him, the promise of houses and national honours made to Super Eagles players had also been redeemed.
“Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word,” he said.
Tinubu congratulated the athletes, reaffirming his commitment to rewarding sporting excellence and encouraging athletes to make Nigeria proud.
“My promise to every Nigerian athlete is: make Nigeria proud, and come back to a grateful nation.
“Congratulations once again, our athletes. Nigeria is proud of you.” Tinubu said.
Accounts of the players and officials were credited on Wednesday, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) acknowledging that all recipients had confirmed receipt of the funds.
D’Tigress clinched a record fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title and seventh overall in 2025 and President Bola Tinubu had pledged cash rewards for the champions at a reception held in their honour.
