Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has called on residents to immediately report any suspicious individuals or movements in their communities to security agencies following intelligence reports exposing alleged plans by terrorists to attack places of worship and public gathering centers across the state.
The governor’s appeal was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Osogbo by his spokesperson, Malam Olawale Rasheed.
Adeleke urged residents, particularly those living in border communities, to remain extra vigilant and promptly alert law enforcement whenever they notice an influx of strange faces.
“We must provide the police and other security agencies with intelligence reports on noticeable threats in our communities,” Governor Adeleke said. “As we are aware of alleged plots to attack our places of worship, we must become extra vigilant. Report anything unusual without any delay.”
The governor commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for taking proactive steps to counter the threat, charging other security agencies to review their strategies and establish action plans to safeguard lives and property. He also announced plans to convene a State Security Council meeting to evaluate the state’s emergency response readiness.
Additionally, Adeleke called on traditional rulers to assemble their local councils to address the emerging security concerns. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to post-election peacebuilding, assuring the public that security measures are being tightened statewide to defeat any attempt by bandits or terrorists to breach public peace.
DSS Alerts Religious Leaders Ahead of 2027 Elections
The governor’s warning follows confidential intelligence obtained by the DSS revealing that terrorist groups are plotting to expand insecurity into southern Nigeria—particularly the South-West region—to create widespread instability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In response to the intelligence, DSS officials held separate meetings in Osogbo on Wednesday with leaders from the Muslim community and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to brief them on the situation and advise on preventive security protocols for religious centers.
Both the President of the Osun State Muslim Community, Alhaji Mustapha Olawuyi, and the state CAN Chairman, Pastor John Adeleke, confirmed the briefings, verifying that the security reports are genuine and that preventive measures are already being communicated to their respective congregations.
