Five farmers have been reportedly murdered by armed men suspected to be herdsmen in the Ajegunle Powerline community in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Channels Television reports that the victims were said to be labourers from Plateau and Kaduna states working on the farmlands.

An eyewitness account narrated that the attack occurred around 3:00 pm on Tuesday, adding that the herdsmen had engaged in destroying their crops and disrupting their livelihood in the community.

According to the source who is also a farmer, the attacks have become a daily occurrence, and many farmers have fled their farms for fear of being killed.

He lamented that the lives of farmers are being endangered, many have been killed, with their women raped occasionally.

One of the labourers who survived the attack, and escaped, revealed that the herdsmen suddenly appeared, and started shooting sporadically, killing five people.

The Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed the incident.

However, she was unable to provide the exact number of casualties, stating that the police were still investigating the matter.
