Some Nigerians are imbeciles and morons, I’m embarrassed to share same country with them – Soyinka

Admin December 6, 2016

Professor Wole Soyinka

Wole SoyinkaNobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says he will hold a private funeral on January 20 when United States President-elect, Donald Trump, is inaugurated as President, not to mourn with Americans but to grieve over the death of Nigeria’s common sense.

He said he is embarrassed to be in the same country as “imbeciles and morons”, and that his proposed funeral has nothing to do with US citizens over their choice of president in Donald Trump.

Soyinka has been in the news lately for his remark on US election, vowing to tear his Green Card should Donald Trump win the Presidential election. He has since left the United States and returned to Nigeria, adding that he would hold onto his green card pending when the President-elect, Donald Trump assumes office.

But speaking on Monday at a media meeting at Freedom Park in Lagos, Soyinka, while analysing the reaction of Nigerians to his threat to tear his green card, after Donald Trump emerged the US president-elect, said he was planning his own Wolexit, an adaptation of Brexit.

According to him, “Why do Nigerians wail louder than the bereaved?

“I am embarrassed to occupy the same nation space as some imbeciles and morons.  I am planning my Wolexit, which could be internal or external.

“On the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, I will have a private funeral to mourn the death of Nigeria’s common sense. If the board agrees (because I do not like to be authoritarian) I will move the residency of my foundation out of the country.”

The revered playwright said that Nigerians did not have the right to query his personal decision to tear his US green card because, to him, it was strictly personal and up to him to do so or not.
