Nigerian musician, activist, and Pan-Africanist Seun Kuti has vowed to mobilize citizens to rise and defend their rights under the aegis of the revived movement.
Resuscitating the Movement of the People party is part of Seun Kuti’s drive to call for better governance in the country, as well as an end to police brutality.
Kuti who appeared on ARISE News on Friday said the modus operandi is to ensure “changing the status quo.”
He described the federal government’s aggression and brutalisation of innocent citizens as a sign of weakness, as he insisted on reviving a political movement started by his father, the legendary Fela Anikulapo kuti.
“These people are billionaires that cannot build anything, they cannot build a nation, they are weak. Being aggressive and brutalising innocent people is not a sign of strength, it further entrenches the notion that this government is weak in the real sense of the word,” Kuti told ARISE News.
Kuti had on Tuesday at the Kalakuta Museum in the Ikeja area of Lagos, said the days in which members of his family were being harassed by security operatives appear to have returned.
“The task at hand for Nigerians is to begin to organize to politically articulate their hopes and aspirations. The mistake we’ve been making in Nigeria is that we always agitated. What the past generation didn’t do are the things we are not doing right now and that is capturing the energy of our own action by ourselves.
“As long as people are benefiting from the oppression of this country, they find ways to justify atrocities that are committed by the people in power.
“That is why MOP is here, to create a party, a movement that will definitely end this atrocious behaviour of a particular set of Nigerians who have decided that things are more important than people,” he said.
He described the Nigerian political elites as “billionaires that cannot build anything and cannot build a nation.”
