How retired army general earned PhD in mathematics at 72

Retired Army General, Ola Orisamolade, says his lifelong love for Mathematics inspired him to earn a doctorate degree at the age of 72.

Orisamolade told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ilorin, Kwara, that his passion for mathematics began in primary school.

Speaking about his PhD from the University of Ilorin, the septuagenarian described his achievement as a testament to his determination and early interest in the subject.

“After completing my primary and secondary education, I proceeded to the University of Lagos to study Mathematics. I later joined the Nigerian Army in 1975,” he told NAN.

“I rose through the ranks to become a General before retiring from the military in 2010.

“My commitment to academic excellence led me to pursue a Master’s degree at the University of Lagos, which I completed in 2017.

“The passion I have for mathematics pushed me further to enroll in a PhD programme at the University of Ilorin—and here I am today, successfully achieving my goal,” he added.

Orisamolade, a native of Ondo Town in Ondo State, has successfully recently defended his doctoral thesis in Mathematics at the University of Ilorin.

The Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Bamidele Owoyele, commended Orisamolade’s accomplishment, noting that it reflected the university’s commitment to providing academic opportunities for all, regardless of age.

His thesis supervisor, Prof. Kamilu Rauf, described the feat as remarkable, highlighting Orisamolade’s dedication, perseverance, and focus throughout the programme.

“Dr Orisamolade’s achievement is a powerful reminder that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s dreams.”

“His story is a source of inspiration to many,” Rauf said.

He added that in spite of facing personal challenges, including the loss of his wife, Orisamolade remained committed to completing his PhD.

“The University of Ilorin fosters a culture of learning and academic excellence, creating a platform for individuals like Dr Orisamolade to thrive and inspire future generations of scholars,” he said.

The university’s postgraduate programmes have produced over 15,000 PhD graduates in the last 15 years.NAN)
