Red Cross deploys rescue teams after train derailment in Delta

Admin June 9, 2026

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) says its Delta State Branch has deployed emergency teams for search, rescue and life-saving operations following a train derailment in Agbor, Delta.

This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of the society, Mr. Chima Nwankwo.

He said the Branch Secretary, Mr. Charles Arinomor, confirmed that Red Cross volunteers arrived promptly at the scene and commenced emergency response operations alongside railway officials and community members.

According to him, other responders involved in the operation include the Commissioner for Special Duties, the Commissioner of Police and the Director-General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Nwankwo said that although active operations were halted at nightfall, significant progress had been made, adding that search and rescue efforts would resume at first light to ensure no victim was left unattended.

He explained that evacuation of stranded passengers was ongoing, with victims being moved to Agbor town to facilitate onward transportation to their respective destinations.

He said injured passengers were quickly evacuated by government ambulances and were currently receiving treatment at Agbor Central Hospital.

According to him, the response effort includes coordinated stakeholder activation, search and rescue operations, immediate first aid and psychosocial support for affected individuals and their families.

He added that the emergency was managed by a combined medical team on ground, with NRCS leadership working closely with state authorities and emergency agencies.

The society reaffirmed its commitment to providing continued medical assistance, relief materials and psychosocial support to affected passengers and their families in collaboration with government authorities.
