Prisoners set Ikoyi prison on fire to escape but we’ve returned them all to their cells – Official

Tosin Akerejowon, Assistant Comptroller General for Corrections Zone A has said that the fire that was witnesses in the Ikoyi prison in Lagos on Thursday was set by the prisoners as a means to escape

In an interview with Arise TV, Akerejowon noted that the record office, admin office and the computer institute were set ablaze in the fire which started at about 11am.

According to him, the had burrowed holes in the perimetre wall of the fence for them to escape.

He added that some of the prison staff were injured .

But he assured that no inmate escaped.

“We can assure you that no inmate escaped. Our record office that was burnt has backup data where we can retrieve all the documents”.

“Prisoners set the prison on fire to escape. We’ve returned all of them to their cells”.
