The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents across the territory and is calling on the public to help locate their mothers.
The rescues occurred in the Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of the FCT. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, detailed the operations in a statement released in Abuja on Friday.
According to Adeh, the first rescue took place on September 2 at approximately 5:45 p.m. in Kurudu. A local resident, identified as Mr. Innocent, reported hearing a child crying near Obodo Street. Upon investigating, he found a baby boy wrapped in a cloth and placed inside a cardboard box.
Officers from the Kurudu Police Division and the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department responded to the scene, secured the child, and transferred him to a local hospital for a medical assessment.
“The baby is in stable condition and has since been handed over to the Social Welfare Department following the completion of necessary documentation.”
In a similar incident on the same night at around 9:40 p.m., a Gwagwalada resident named Mr. Ibrahim discovered an abandoned baby girl crying outside his house gate.
Ibrahim and fellow community members rescued the child and reported the case to the Gwagwalada Police Station shortly after.
The JWC Department escorted the infant to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for a medical examination. She is currently receiving medical care and will likewise be transferred to Social Welfare Development officials.
Commending the residents for their swift action, SP Adeh stated that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances behind both abandonments.
She appealed to anyone with information that could lead to identifying the mothers or family members of the children to contact the nearest police station or call 07038979348 or 08107314192.
