A police officer who allegedly shot and killed a truck driver at a security checkpoint along Akure/Owo Federal Highway in Ondo state has turned himself in after days of hiding.

The officer, identified as Sergeant Idowu Omosuyi in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, SP Femi Joseph, shot the driver in the head after a heated argument with the policemen at the checkpoint.

SP Joseph stated that Sergeant Omosuyi surrendered himself on Thursday to a team of investigators constituted by the Commissioner of Police, Undie Adiem, who had ordered a thorough probe into the killing of the truck driver.

“The Ondo State Police Command is pleased to inform the general public that the erring officer, Sergeant Idowu Omosuyi who shot and killed a haulage driver at a point in Uso, near Owo, a few days ago has turned himself in”.

“He surrendered himself this afternoon to a team of investigators Constituted by the Commissioner of Police Ondo State to probe the incident. He is at present undergoing an Orderly Room trial at the state headquarters Akure.”

He also noted that the latest development will help hasten the investigation and eventual arraignment at a court of competent jurisdiction.

“This development will no doubt enable us to conclude our investigation speedily and charge the suspect to court as soon as possible. We want to restate our earlier stand that the command and indeed the Nigeria police will never shield any of its personnel that commits any manner of infraction or illegality.”
