The Police Command in Cross River State has launched a full-scale investigation following the discovery of the beheaded body of an unidentified teenager in the Yahe River, located within the Yala Local Government Area.
The victim, estimated to be around 16 years old, was found dead in the river with his head severed from his body. According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Sunday Eitokpah, who disclosed the incident in a statement released in Calabar on Monday, the grim discovery was reported around 5:30 p.m. by the Officer-in-Charge of the Yahe Outstation, ASP Ekurbe Abi.
Following the report, police operatives recovered the corpse from the river. Authorities noted that bloodstains observed at the scene have raised serious concerns regarding the violent circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
The corpse has since undergone a medical examination and been deposited in a mortuary, while law enforcement works to establish the identity of the deceased.
In response to the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Ordue, has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
CP Ordue has also called upon residents of Yahe and neighboring communities to come forward if they have a missing person matching the victim’s description or can provide credible information to aid the probe. Members of the public with useful leads are encouraged to contact their nearest police station or reach the command control room directly via 0704 177 7060 or 0705 335 5415.
The command has assured residents that further updates regarding the investigation will be communicated as it progresses.
