Oborevwori charges NYSC members: Help to develop your host communities

Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the state to contribute their quota to the development of the respective communities they were posted to serve.

Oborevwori gave the charge at the official closing ceremony of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Corps members deployed to the state at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Issele Uku on Tuesday.

The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff (CoS), Johnson Erijo, urged the corps members to be ready to make a difference in the standard of living of the people in their host communities by embarking on realisable life-changing development projects.

“As you report to your various places of primary assignment in your host communities, you should resolve to contribute your quota to the sustainable development of the place and community you are posted to.

“Operate with an open mind, which will enable you to explore and discover new grounds, friends and wonderful opportunities,” he said.

He also urged the corps members to respect the culture of their host communities during their one year service.

Oborevwori said, “I urge you to realise that through this course, you have been equipped with leadership qualities of perseverance, endurance, discipline, selflessness, sacrifice.

“I know you have the ability to live peacefully with others from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds.

“I appeal to you to make the best use of the knowledge you have garnered here to thrive better in your new environment and thereafter.”

The governor noted that Delta was very safe and hospitable and assured the youth corps members of the warmth and love of Deltans wherever they were posted to for their primary assignments.

He urged them to respect the cultural norms and traditions of the people among whom they would find themselves.

”Please, learn to show understanding and adaptability as a way of justifying some of the reasons of the national service,” he added.

Also speaking, Delta NYSC Coordinator, Mr Olusegun Alao, urged the corps members to make meaningful impact on the life of those they would come across in the course of their primary assignments.

“My dear corps members, this three-week exercise was well packaged to assist you go into your various places of primary assignment.

“Area officers will be visiting you on a regular basis to ascertain your level of adjustment in your host communities,” he said.

The state coordinator commended the employers of the corps members for giving then a veritable platform to perform optimally.

“I wish to remind you about the far-reaching resolutions at the Corps Employers Workshop held recently on the welfare of corps members.

“Please, do well to keep them in good places and provide them with basic welfare arrangements that will assist them settle in quickly and render service with minimal stress,” he said.

Alao said that 1,905 prospective corps members comprising of 891 males and 1014 females participated in the orientation course. (NAN)
