NDLEA apprehends 216 suspected drug peddlers in Cross River

Court sacks Cross River lawmakers

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Command in Cross River, says it apprehended no fewer than 216 suspected drug peddlers between November 2025 and April 2026, the Commander, Mr. John Anteyi, told a news conference in Calabar on Friday.

“Anteyi disclosed that the group comprises 170 men and 46 women, noting that the command seized a total of 6.01 tons and 16.2 liters of drugs during the period.”

He stated that the command successfully recovered over five tons (5,813kg) of Cannabis Sativa, alongside 23.2kg of hemp seeds and 168.8kg of psychotropic substances.

According to him, the NDLEA also seized 602 grams of Methamphetamine, 56.8 grams of Heroin, 0.73 grams of Estacy drugs and Cannabis Tinture, destroying six hectares of cannabis farm during the period.

Providing a breakdown of legal proceedings, he noted that the command has already seen 21 offenders convicted. Additionally, 24 new cases were recently initiated, bringing the total number of pending court matters to 94, while no fewer than 87 sensitisation programmes were carried out during the period.

“During the period, 54 drug tests were carried out, 37 tested positive, and we’re 17 negative.

“Also, our drug reduction unit counselled 119 persons, out of which 92 are male and 27 female,” he said.

Anteyi pointed to drug abuse as a major factor fueling national insecurity, warning of the growing dangers of illicit trade. He further explained that while the command’s recent seizures were successful, the agency still faces significant obstacles in its mission.

He listed some of the challenges to include lack of operational vehicles, paucity of fund, and unwillingness of members of the public to give information.(NAN)
