Since the launch of GSM services in Nigeria in 2001, MTN has remained one of the major players in the country’s telecommunications revolution.
MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest mobile telecommunications operator, has endorsed the forthcoming eWorldForum and Book Launch scheduled for September 24, 2026, at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
MTN’s endorsement adds significant weight to an event that will commemorate 25 years of GSM in Nigeria and examine the profound transformation the technology has brought to the country’s telecommunications industry and wider digital economy.
Since the launch of GSM services in Nigeria in 2001, MTN has remained one of the major players in the country’s telecommunications revolution. Its early investments in network infrastructure helped lay the foundation for the rapid expansion of mobile connectivity that followed.
A notable milestone in that journey was the deployment of MTN’s Y’elloBahn digital microwave transmission backbone, commissioned on January 20, 2003. The project initially covered approximately 3,400 kilometres and represented a major infrastructure investment at a time when Nigeria’s mobile telecommunications industry was still in its formative years.
The subsequent expansion of Y’elloBahn further strengthened MTN’s network capacity and supported the company’s growing footprint as mobile communications rapidly spread across the country.
MTN’s Nigerian journey has also featured a succession of notable executives, from Adrian Wood, who played a prominent role during the company’s formative years, to its current Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola. Under successive leadership, MTN has grown into a major force in Nigeria’s telecommunications and digital economy, creating employment, supporting businesses and contributing to the development of the country’s communications infrastructure.
The company’s distinctive yellow branding, retail outlets, service centres and extensive distribution network soon became familiar features of Nigerian communities. At the same time, the emerging mobile economy created new opportunities for entrepreneurs, retailers, agents and other participants across the country.
More than a technological development, the GSM revolution fundamentally changed the way Nigerians communicate, conduct business, access information and connect with the rest of the world.
Twenty-five years after the launch of GSM, the industry is now entering another defining phase, driven by broadband, smartphones, digital services, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other emerging technologies.
It is against this backdrop that the eWorldForum, themed “GSM Revolution: 25 Years On,” will bring together key industry stakeholders to reflect on the journey so far and consider the future of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
The programme will feature a keynote address by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), as well as a high-level panel discussion titled “What Happens After the GSM Revolution?” The discussion will examine the next chapter of Nigeria’s telecommunications and digital transformation.
The event will also feature the public presentation of two books documenting and reflecting on Nigeria’s telecommunications journey and the evolution of the industry over the past quarter-century.
MTN Nigeria’s endorsement comes at a significant moment, as the telecommunications industry looks back on 25 years of unprecedented transformation while turning its attention to the technologies, infrastructure and opportunities that will define Nigeria’s next digital era.
