Dr. Adeleke Mamora, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), has re-iterated Federal Government’s determination to maintain welding in Nigerian school curriculum, especially technical education.

This is contained in a statement by Atuora Obed, Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations of the ministry on Wednesday in Abuja.

Obed said the Minister stated this when Mr. Solomon Edebiri, President of the Nigerian Institute of Welding visited him in Abuja on Wednesday.

Mamora assured that maintaining welding in school curriculum would lead to the development and sustenance of the welding industry.

The minister said that developing the welding industry would fast track the growth of the steel sector.

He said adequate development, management and sustenance of the sector would create jobs for the teeming youth population in the country.

Mr. Ikechukwu Ikoh, Minister of State for STI, said that Nigerians also needed to be trained in the skill of welding in to avoid deployment of foreign personnel.

Ikoh said that indigenous welders needed encouragement and re-training for global competitiveness.

In his remarks, Edebiri, President of the Institute, recalled the existing collaboration between the ministry and the Institute, which also involved drafting of the National Institute of Welding.

He also reminded minister about the establishment of a national capacity and capability development plan for welding and related skills.
