At the end of July, GloverApp completed an orderly wind-down of its operations.
Startup stories usually celebrate the beginnings. The ideas. The fundraising announcements. The product launches. The growth milestones. And if all goes well, the acquisitions or public listings. But how founders choose to end businesses is a critical part of entrepreneurship that receives far less attention.
At the end of July, GloverApp completed an orderly wind-down of its operations. It was one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make, but it was also one of the most important leadership decisions of my career.
As founders, I believe we should devote critical thinking to how we close companies responsibly, as much how to build them.
Success should not be measured only by survival
The startup ecosystem often celebrates resilience. We admire founders who keep pushing despite difficult circumstances. But persistence without a realistic path to sustainability can sometimes become a liability. Not just for founders, but for employees, customers, investors and partners.
Leadership therefore, requires knowing the difference between temporary setbacks and structural challenges. At Glover, we reached a point where we had to ask ourselves a difficult question: “Are we continuing because the business has a sustainable future, or because we simply don’t want to admit the journey has changed”?
Hope is important in entrepreneurship no doubt, but hope is not a strategy. Admitting that truism wasn’t easy.
*Customers are not venture capital*
Too often, we’ve seen companies delay difficult decisions while customer obligations continue to grow. But customers should never become unwilling financiers when businesses struggle.
That wasn’t a path we were prepared to take. Before announcing our wind-down, we made one principle non-negotiable: every legitimate customer balance would be protected. Everything else: timelines, communication, operational planning, was built around that commitment.
If customers trusted us with their money, then we owe them clarity and transparency. Trust should never expire simply because a business is closing.

There is always a temptation to delay bad news. But we chose to communicate openly with our employees, customers and partners because uncertainty often creates more damage than difficult news delivered early and honestly. People are remarkably understanding when they are treated with respect.
*Employees deserve dignity*
Behind every startup are people who have invested more than their time. They invest belief. They invest ambition. They invest years of their careers. That is why employees should never discover the future of their company via rumors or social media.
As founders, we have a responsibility to communicate early, provide clarity, honor employment commitments and support people as they transition to their next opportunities.
Closing a business should never mean abandoning the people who helped build it.
*Failing does not equate failure*
Entrepreneurship involves experimentation. But not every experiment succeeds. Markets evolve. Consumer behavior changes. Economic realities shift. Sometimes, even good businesses find themselves operating in environments that no longer support long-term sustainability.
Orderly wind-downs should not be viewed as signs of weakness.
As Africa’s technology ecosystem matures, conversations around startup governance must mature as well. A healthy ecosystem is not one where every startup succeeds. It is one where founders, investors and operators know how to navigate every stage of a company’s lifecycle responsibly with professionalism and accountability, most especially, when circumstances become difficult.
*The end of one chapter is not the end of innovation*
Entrepreneurship has always been about solving problems, learning quickly and moving forward with greater wisdom. Some lessons come through growth. Others come through adversity.
My Glover experience was another critical chapter in a life-long lessons on how to do entrepreneurship right. And the lessons I leave with are invaluable:
a.Build for sustainability as much as growth;
b.Respect all stakeholders
c.Communicate before speculation takes hold;
d.Protect customers even when it is difficult;
e.And remember that reputation is shaped as much by how you leave as by how you arrive.
I remain deeply grateful to our customers, employees, partners and everyone who believed in Glover. Together, we built something meaningful.
And while this Glover chapter has come to a close, I hope the way we concluded it contributes, in some small way, to building a stronger, more accountable and more trusted technology ecosystem across Africa.
Because in the end, the true legacy of a company is not measured only by how high it climbed, but by how responsibly it honored the people who climbed with it.
