The Lagos State Government has said that it would soon release new methods that will aid private participants in building control and development measures of the present administration.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins revealed this during a recent meeting held with a World Bank Team in Alausa, stressing that the proposed involvement of the private sector in the building regulatory process in Lagos would be encapsulated in three major initiatives.

According to him, the three major areas are the Certified Accredited Programme, the Post-Approval and the Certificate of Structural Integrity, which are expected to enhance service delivery.

He said, “Through these measures and starting from next year, we will be able to effectively partner with the private sector in the areas of project supervision and stage certification as well as assessment of the structural stability of buildings in areas where building collapse is prevalent as a pilot”.

The Commissioner further disclosed that the Ministry would appreciate the World Bank’s collaboration for the success of the new initiative, especially in the areas of capacity building, public sensitisation and automation of Planning Permits.

The World Bank Senior Urban Development Specialist, Fuad Malkawi, who commended the initiative, said that the World Bank team would be willing to provide technical assistance through the Lagos Platform for Development for the successful implementation of the Ministry’s programme.

Present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Oluwole Sotire; Special Assistant to the Governor on Physical Planning, Arc. Dokun Roberts and Directors in the Ministry.
