LASBCA REMOVES ILLEGAL BLOCK OF SHOPS BUILT UNDER HIGH POWERLINES, ROAD SETBACKS IN EJIGBO

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has removed a row of shops illegally built on road setback and directly under the powerline cable along Laurel School Crescent by Red Street, Bungalow Estate, off Isheri Osun Road, Jakande Area, Ejigbo.

According to the General Manager, LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, the removal of the block of shops was deemed necessary because of the imminent danger it poses to the lives of the occupants due to the electromagnetic radiation that is very harmful to the human body.

Oki further emphasised that the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Laws prohibit the erection of structures under powerlines and road setbacks, it also specifies the distance that should be observed between a building and a public utility such as power cables.

He disclosed that, before the removal, necessary notices were served, including Contravention, Quit and Demolition Notices.

The General Manager reiterated the Agency’s readiness and commitment to ridding the State of illegality in the built environment by ensuring that the State Building Codes are strictly adhered to as this will help reduce to zero level the menace of building collapse in the State.

He implored building owners/developers to stop the construction of both residential and commercial buildings on road setbacks and under high power lines because of the danger such an act poses to public safety.

Oki enjoined the residents to report any illegal building construction noticed in their vicinities to any LASBCA Office nearest to them for prompt action.
