The Police Command in Lagos State has initiated disciplinary proceedings against a police inspector captured in a viral video making inappropriate ethnic and political comments aboard a public transit vehicle.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the development in a statement released on Friday in Lagos, emphasizing the command’s stance on transparency, accountability, and professional standards.
According to Adebisi, the unidentified inspector was filmed making derogatory political and ethnic remarks regarding former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi, asserting that an Igbo candidate could not achieve the presidency, alongside other unsubstantiated allegations.
The PPRO explicitly distanced the command from the inspector’s statements, clarifying that the officer spoke strictly in a personal capacity.
“The statements made by the inspector do not represent the position, views, or official disposition of the command or the Nigeria Police Force (NPF),” Adebisi stated, adding that the command will not condone any conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Lagos State, Mr. Fatai Tijani, ordered immediate disciplinary measures in accordance with internal regulations governing personnel conduct.
CP Tijani reminded officers across the state that wearing the police uniform comes with a strict responsibility to maintain integrity, respect, and civility when interacting with members of the public.
The command reiterated its commitment to policing with humility and enforcing strict discipline among personnel.
Officers were warned that actions calculated to undermine public confidence or compromise police neutrality would attract firm administrative consequences.
The command assured members of the public that the outcome of the disciplinary review would be handled in line with established police regulations.
