To tackle post-harvest losses and solidify food security, the Lagos State Government has inaugurated the Agege Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub at Pen Cinema, Agege.
This facility marks the state’s third mid-level food hub, following the launch of the pioneer Mushin facility in December 2023 and the Abijo hub earlier this year. Designed around a hub-and-spoke model, these centers aim to shorten supply chains, eliminate middleman markups, reduce post-harvest waste, and streamline food distribution across the metropolis.
Key Highlights of the Agege Fresh Food Hub
Capacity & Size: Occupies roughly 7,000 m², featuring a 4,000 m² trading floor capable of accommodating 350 to 400 vendors.
Storage Facilities: Equipped with 1,200 m² of dry storage (approx. 800 metric tonnes capacity) and 300 metric tonnes of cold storage to preserve fresh goods.
Specialised Sections & Logistics: Includes an expanded seafood section, parking for 80 to 90 vehicles, and 10 electric vehicle charging points.
Economic Impact: Projected to facilitate over ₦5 billion in food transactions annually.
Operations Timeline: Full commercial trading will begin in six weeks following operator onboarding and system setup.
“The commissioning of this Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub in Agege is not simply the unveiling of another piece of infrastructure. It is the physical expression of a larger vision that places food security at the heart of our development agenda… With over 70% of Lagos’ food produced outside our borders, fragmented supply chains expose residents to high costs and price volatility. We are transforming the entire value chain,” the Governor said.
According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, the prototype facility in Mushin has already recorded over ₦4 billion in transaction value across 228 market days, registered more than 850 vendors, and generated 7,000+ direct and indirect jobs.
Ms. Abisola Olusanya, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, highlighted that the state is backing the new hub with a comprehensive 351-page operating framework.
This framework governs produce receiving, quality control, sanitation, inventory, and cold-chain management while preserving traders’ autonomy over their pricing and commercial terms.
The Vision Ahead
The Agege facility is part of the broader Lagos State Food Systems Transformation Agenda. Similar hubs are currently underway in Opebi and Bombata, with additional sites identified in Ikorodu, Apapa, Festac, and Lekki. The government’s long-term goal is to establish structured food hubs across every Local Government (LGA) and Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State.
