The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to create avenues for science students to exhibit their talents and skills that aid non-academic activities and will play crucial roles in learning and preparing them for a better future.
The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, disclosed this at the award ceremony for the Y2021 World Science Day Egg Drop Challenge, saying that the State will continue to create an environment that will promote creativity and innovation in Schools.
Adefisayo, while commending the Ministry of Science and Technology for organising this programme, challenged the students to take leadership today in order to become greater leaders of tomorrow.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ms. Olayinka Fashola, said the Ministry embarked on the science challenge project to encourage creativity and innovation amongst science students in secondary schools as well as improve their self-esteem and boost confidence.
She said that 478 schools across the State signed up to participate while 110 participants uploaded videos of the challenge to the social media platform of Instagram and Facebook – #lagosschoolseggdropchallenge. The videos submitted showed the creativity and innovativeness of schools, teachers and pupils in Lagos State.
Noting that the State Government will continue to encourage the development of hidden talents among the students, the Permanent Secretary advised that they should not relent in maximising their latent skills for a productive future.
In his remarks, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Olusina Thorpe, stated that the principle of the project is to discover the hidden abilities of the students.
He noted that Science is dynamic and flexible, adding that success can only be achieved through hard work, commitment and self-determination.
A hundred schools that participated in the challenge were presented with certificates out of which 12 schools were specially recognised for obeying the rules of the challenge and their outstanding designs which demonstrated innovation, creativity and initiation.
