The Lagos State House of Assembly on Wednesday held a public hearing on a proposed bill seeking to establish the Lagos State Artisans and Craftsmen Regulatory Board to standardise and regulate informal sector operations across the state.
Organised by the House Committee on Industry, Commerce and Cooperatives chaired by Mr. Tobun Abiodun at the Assembly complex in Ikeja, the hearing aimed to gather inputs from key industry stakeholders before the bill advances through the legislative process.
Abiodun explained that the law intends to grant formal recognition to artisans such as plumbers, carpenters, and woodworkers, safeguard their professional rights, and improve access to government support while establishing clear mechanisms to handle consumer complaints and address professional misconduct.
Speaking on behalf of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda emphasized that public engagement remains a cornerstone of the Assembly’s legislative approach.
She noted that the regulatory board would conduct training workshops, oversee skill certifications, and enforce standards to protect both service providers and consumers.
Supporting the initiative, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr. Bankole Ajigbotafe, lauded the bill as a vital step toward economic inclusion, formal certification, and structured growth for the informal economy.
Contributions were also made by representative bodies, including the Lagos State Council of Tradesmen and Artisans (LASCOTA) and the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA).
Additionally, the Managing Director of Ibile Metropolitan Project, Aare Deji Okunubi, urged lawmakers to expand the bill’s scope to cover mechanics, welders, and hairdressers, highlighting the potential for certified Lagos artisans to export their services beyond state borders.
Responding to submissions, the House leadership assured participants that feedback including concerns regarding certificate renewals and consumer protection checks would be integrated into the final legislation.
