Kidnapping: Senator seeks psychotherapy for 10 rescued UNIBEN students

Admin April 23, 2025

April 23, 2025

Sen. Tony Nwoye (LP-Anambra), has called on the Federal Government to provide psychotherapy and specialised rehabilitation for the 10 rescued university students abducted by suspected terrorists along Benin-Sagamu highway.

Nwoye, who represents Anambra North Senatorial District made the call in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

The students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) were abducted in the Ofosu area on April 16 on their way to Babcock University for the Annual Generation of Youth for Christ (GYC) Africa Conference.

However, on Saturday the Edo Police Command though its spokesperson SP Moses Yamu, said that the police rescued the eight males and two females.

Reacting to the news of the rescue, Nwoye also a former national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), said that the police have proved with the rescue that the terrorists who brutalise students and Nigerians were not invincible.

He commended the police authorities for rescuing the students, describing the action as an act of gallantry.

“It gives me great joy that the police have proved to all sceptics that they have the capacity and wherewithal to deal with these bad guys tormenting our citizens; and when they do right, I must join in applauding them,” he said.

The lawmaker noting his experience as a former NANS president in the fight against cultism, therefore called on the authorities and the Federal Government to provide psychological therapy to the released students.

“The administration however must not end here, as I call on President Bola Tinubu to direct psychological therapy for these students to relieve them of what could otherwise be a lifelong trauma on account of their time with the kidnappers in the bush.

“Even more, I urge the president to inspire and to move with zeal in ensuring that every other Nigerian and especially students in the custody of kidnappers are set free immediately,” Nwoye added.
