Police in Bauchi State have arrested a 33-year-old housewife for allegedly killing her co-wife following a violent domestic incident at the Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate in Bauchi metropolis.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday in Bauchi.
According to Habib, officers at the C-Division Police Station received a distress call on Sunday, September 27, at about 4:05 p.m., reporting a violent altercation between two wives living in the same house.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, who is the second wife, allegedly struck the first wife on the forehead with a wooden pestle while acting under hallucinations, causing the victim to collapse unconscious.
“Upon receipt of the report, detectives attached to C-Division immediately mobilised to the scene,” Habib said.
“The scene was documented, and the victim was rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, where she was certified dead by a medical doctor.”
He added that the victim’s body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary for an autopsy, while the pestle used in committing the crime was recovered as an exhibit.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the suspect and the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
While condoling with the victim’s family, CP Aliyu warned against domestic violence and urged household heads to seek timely medical and psychosocial intervention whenever family members show signs of mental health challenges.
