The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), in collaboration with TPHG Technologies Limited, organised a Stakeholders’ Engagement for the implementation of the Greenhouse Gas Registry for Lagos State, known as the Lagos Carbon Registry.
According to him, the initiative marked a significant step in the Lagos State government’s efforts to become more resilient in the face of climate change, which is increasingly becoming a global threat to human existence.
Represented by the Agency’s Director of Environmental Sustainability (E-Waste & Plastic Solutions), Mrs. Adedayo Adebayo, the General Manager said, “The Lagos Carbon Registry is a crucial tool in our fight against climate change.
“It will help us track and verify greenhouse gas emissions from various sources, identify opportunities for reduction, and promote clean energy solutions.
He explained that the registry, which will operate through an online registration, will allow stakeholders to report and track their emissions while demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability.
Dr. Ajayi stated that the new initiative would provide an avenue for stakeholders to self-audit and regulate their emissions, thereby reducing the overall carbon footprint of the State.
In a similar vein, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi Akodu reiterated the State’s longstanding commitment to climate action.
The Special Adviser, who was represented by Mr. Bankole Omoniyi, Deputy Director and Head of Climate Change, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, explained that the Ministry’s work on emissions inventory is crucial for addressing climate challenges.
“Over the years, Lagos State has prioritised climate change through various summits and initiatives aimed at making the State more sustainable and resilient. This new effort underscores our dedication to understanding and managing our emissions”, he noted.
The Head of Air Quality & Emissions Control, LASEPA, Mrs. Ayodele Osho also spoke on the importance of the initiative, noting that the event marks a major milestone in the efforts to implement the Greenhouse Gas Registry and industrial sector emissions inventory under the Lagos Carbon Registry.
Osho emphasised the benefits of the registry in reducing the State’s carbon footprint, improving energy efficiency, and protecting natural carbon sinks.
The Lead Consultant from TPHG Technologies Limited, Mofoluso Fagbeja, who presented an introduction to the Lagos Greenhouse Gas Registry took participants through various benefits of the new initiative both to the public health and the environment.
