The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a strict directive banning its officers from serving as escorts to politicians or leading political convoys during campaigns for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The warning was issued by Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Abimbola Owolabi, the Zonal Commanding Officer for RS6, during her maiden official visit to the Cross River State Command in Calabar on Wednesday.
Owolabi emphasised that official patrol vehicles and operational sirens must not be deployed for political activities or private functions, such as weddings and funeral processions. Instead, FRSC personnel deployed to political campaign venues are mandated to focus solely on managing traffic to prevent congestion and avoid road crashes.
“Misconduct by patrol operators and other personnel undermines public confidence in the corps. Officers must be extremely accountable across operational units,” Owolabi warned.
Beyond political neutrality, the Zonal Commander outlined several key operational guidelines to maintain the integrity and safety of the corps:
Zero Tolerance for Corruption: Owolabi warned personnel against extortion, corruption, and unprofessional conduct, urging them to safeguard the corps’ reputation through high operational standards and accountability.
Officer Safety and Discretion: Personnel were advised to prioritize their safety during enforcement duties and avoid unnecessary confrontations with motorists that could lead to physical assaults, injuries, or uniform damage.Road Safety and
Awareness: She called for intensified public education campaigns aimed at reducing road crashes to achieve zero fatalities, alongside stronger partnerships with private towing operators to clear broken-down vehicles and highway obstructions promptly.
Health and Welfare: The commander encouraged officers to look after their physical health by taking advantage of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). She also appealed to the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association (ROSOWA) to continue supporting their spouses in their duty to save lives.
